Bowling tips for beginners

New to bowling, or haven't been in years? These tips will raise your score faster than anything else, with no special equipment.

1. Pick the right ball

Grab a house ball you can swing comfortably. Many adults use 12 to 15 pounds, but the right weight is one you can control for a whole game. Your fingers should fit snugly without squeezing, and your thumb should come out cleanly. See what weight bowling ball to use.

2. Stand in the same place every time

Use the dots on the approach to start in the same spot for every throw. Consistency is the fastest way to improve. If you start somewhere different each time, you can't learn from your misses.

3. Look at the arrows, not the pins

Pick one of the arrows about 15 feet down the lane and roll the ball over it. It's much easier to hit a target that's close. Most beginners improve right away just by switching their eyes from the pins to the arrows.

4. Let the ball swing

Don't throw the ball like a baseball or muscle it down the lane. Push it out, let it swing back like a pendulum, and let it come forward naturally as you take your last step. Keep your arm straight and your shoulders square to the lane.

5. Finish your swing

After you let go, keep your arm moving toward your target and hold your finish for a second. A good follow-through keeps the ball on line.

6. Make your spares

Beginners lose more points on missed spares than missed strikes. A spare in every frame with no strikes scores well over 100. Learn to shoot single pins straight and across the lane: how to pick up spares.

7. Learn the scoring

Knowing how strikes and spares score helps you see why spares matter so much. The bowling score calculator explains it and lets you tally a game.

8. Mind the foul line

Don't step over the foul line at the end of the approach. It counts as a foul, scores zero, and the lane past it is slippery with oil.
