Bowling average calculator
Updated
Type in your game scores to get your bowling average, total pins, high game and high series. Already have an average? The second calculator shows what it becomes after tonight's games.
High series is the best three games in a row, in the order you typed them, as leagues count it.
Update your average after tonight
Enter your current average and how many games it's from, then tonight's scores.
Your current average can't tell exactly how many pins you have (the fraction was dropped), so the new average assumes you were right at it. Leagues working from total pins may differ by one.
How to calculate a bowling average
Add up the scores of all your games and divide by the number of games. Drop any fraction: bowling averages are always whole numbers, rounded down.
- Three games of 150, 162 and 141 total 453 pins.
- 453 ÷ 3 = 151, so your average is 151.
- Six games totaling 911 pins: 911 ÷ 6 = 151.8, still a 151 average.
Leagues keep a running total of your pins and games for the season and recalculate after every night, which is exactly what the second calculator does.
Common questions
Do you round a bowling average up?
No. Averages drop the fraction, so 159.9 is a 159 average.
How many games does it take to have an established average?
Most leagues use your average once you've bowled 9 to 21 games. Until then, they usually go by last season's average.
What is a good bowling average?
Casual bowlers often average 100 to 140. League bowlers commonly average 160 to 200, and an average over 200 is excellent.
What is a series in bowling?
A set of three games bowled in one session, the usual league format. A 600 series means 600 pins over those three games.
